Installation of Advanced CCTV Cameras Begins in Thane

Date:

The Maharashtra state government has launched a major project to install over 6,000 advanced CCTV cameras across the cities of Thane, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur. The installation work has now begun in Thane and Bhiwandi, with 80 cameras already installed at various locations.

Once completed, this project is expected to curb crime and help enforce traffic rules more effectively. The Thane Police Commissionerate covers the areas of Thane, Kalwa, Mumbra, Diva, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur, which collectively have 35 police stations. With the growing population in Thane, Diva, Ambernath, and Badlapur, the current police manpower is insufficient, contributing to a rise in crime.

Plan to Install 6,051 CCTV Cameras

While the Thane Municipal Corporation had already installed CCTV cameras at a few locations, their numbers were not adequate. As a result, the police proposed installing 6,051 CCTV cameras at key junctions, major roads, isolated spots, and traffic signals across the Thane Commissionerate region.

The state government approved significant funding for this project, and the Home Department carried out the tendering process. After completing the necessary permissions and clearances, the installation work has now commenced in Thane and Bhiwandi.

The surveillance footage from the newly installed cameras will be monitored by the respective local police stations. These include fixed and rotating dome cameras, as well as high-tech ‘ANPR’ (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras that can clearly capture vehicle number plates even from a distance or in low light. Additionally, RLVDS (Red Light Violation Detection System) cameras will be used to record vehicle speeds.

According to available data, the project plans to install 3,163 cameras between Thane and Diva, 1,347 in Bhiwandi, and 1,541 in the Ulhasnagar to Badlapur stretch.
