Century-Old Elphinstone Bridge Demolition Begins, New Double-Decker to Ease Traffic

Date:

This development is expected to improve east-west connectivity and ease traffic congestion in central Mumbai.

Mumbai’s century-old Elphinstone Road Overbridge (ROB) is being demolished after serving the city for more than 100 years. The demolition work began on the evening of September 12, marking the end of a British-era structure that connected Parel and Prabhadevi.

Elphinstone Bridge Demolition

The bridge, built in 1913, has now been closed to the public. A new double-decker bridge will be constructed at the same spot as part of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector Project. This development is expected to improve east-west connectivity and ease traffic congestion in central Mumbai. A stone marking its construction year still remains visible on the old structure.
While the new project promises better infrastructure, the demolition and rebuilding work will cause traffic disruptions for nearly two years, according to civic authorities. The old bridge’s demolition itself will take around 60 days, and the new double-decker ROB is expected to be completed in about 18 months.

Traffic Diversions and Alternate Routes

The closure will affect both local commuters and state transport (ST) buses. ST buses from the Parel Depot will now be rerouted via Madke Buva Chowk (Parel TT Junction) – Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road – Bharat Mata Junction – Sant Jagnade Chowk – Sane Guruji Marg – Chinchpokli Bridge – N.M. Joshi Marg, before returning through the same route. Due to the longer distance, ticket prices will rise by Rs. 10.

For Shivneri and E-Shivneri buses, the new route will be Dadar TT Circle – Tilak Bridge – Kabutar Khana right turn – Bhavani Shankar Road – Sharadashram – Gopinath Chavan Chowk – Parel Bus Station.

East to West traffic:

  • From Parel/Byculla East to Prabhadevi, Worli, Coastal Road, and Sealink, vehicles must use Chinchpokli Bridge.
  • Vehicles from Dadar East to Dadar West/Market must use Tilak Bridge.
  • From Parel East to Prabhadevi and Lower Parel, commuters must use Currey Road Bridge between 7 am and 3 pm.

West to East traffic:

  • Vehicles from Dadar West to Dadar East must also use Tilak Bridge.
  • From Prabhadevi and Lower Parel (West) to Parel, Tata Hospital, and KEM Hospital, vehicles must use Currey Road Bridge between 3 pm and 11 pm.
  • From Prabhadevi/Worli/Coastal Road/Sealink to Parel and Byculla East, vehicles must use Chinchpokli Bridge.

Authorities have urged commuters to follow alternative routes and plan their travel accordingly to avoid congestion in the Dadar, Lower Parel, Currey Road, and Bharat Mata areas.
