BMC to Launch Special Drive to Remove Abandoned Vehicles; Tender Issued Worth Rs 1 Crore

Date:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to launch a major campaign to remove abandoned vehicles across the city. A tender worth Rs 1 crore has been issued for this purpose.

The drive will not only focus on such vehicles but also on debris and construction waste dumped on roads. The civic body’s traffic department will be leading this initiative, which is expected to ease traffic congestion caused by these abandoned vehicles.

Abandoned vehicles on major roads and internal lanes have become a persistent problem in the city, obstructing traffic flow. Since these vehicles have been left unattended for years and no one is claiming ownership, the question of what to do with them has remained unresolved.

Vehicles to Be Sent to Scrap Yards

Many such vehicles have been lying idle on the streets for years, occupying valuable parking space. The BMC now plans to seize these vehicles and send them to scrapyards. Once the tender process is complete, a contractor will be appointed to carry out the operation, civic officials said.

The special drive will also target debris dumped carelessly on roads. The tender explicitly includes debris removal as part of the contract. While the BMC has designated dumping areas for construction debris—where a fee is charged—some contractors avoid these charges and illegally dump waste at random locations. With several ongoing construction projects in the city, the BMC is now paying equal attention to this issue. The contract will be valid for two years.
