BMC to Collect Garbage Fees from Homes, Hotels, Marriage Halls, and Clinics

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon start charging garbage collection fees from residential and commercial establishments, including homes, hotels, marriage halls, exhibition centers, coffee shops, dhabas, guest houses, banks, coaching classes, clinics, dispensaries, cold storage units, and festival halls. The charges will range from Rs 100 to Rs 7,500 per month.

BMC has prepared a draft proposal that includes not only garbage collection fees but also an increase in penalties for littering. The draft was released on Monday, and the civic body has invited public feedback between April 1 and May 31, 2025. BMC expects to generate Rs 687 crore annually from this initiative.

A BMC official stated that Mumbai currently incurs the highest per capita expenditure on garbage management in the country, spending Rs 3,141 per person annually.

How Much Will Mumbai Residents Have to Pay?

  • Homes
    • Up to 50 sq. meters: ₹100/month
    • 50 to 300 sq. meters: ₹500/month
    • Above 300 sq. meters: ₹1,000/month
  • Commercial Establishments & Businesses
    • Shops, eateries (dhabas, sweet shops, coffee houses, etc.): ₹500/month
    • Guest houses: ₹2,000/month
    • Hostels: ₹750/month
    • Non-star hotels/restaurants: ₹1,500/month
    • Hotels/restaurants (up to 3 stars): ₹2,500/month
    • Hotels/restaurants (above 3 stars): ₹7,500/month
  • Offices & Educational Institutions
    • Commercial offices, government offices, banks, insurance offices, coaching classes, educational institutions: ₹750/month
  • Healthcare Facilities
    • Clinics, dispensaries (up to 50 beds): ₹2,000/month
    • Labs (up to 50 sq. meters): ₹2,500/month
    • Clinics, dispensaries (above 50 beds): ₹4,000/month
    • Labs (above 50 sq. meters): ₹5,000/month
  • Industries & Storage
    • Small & cottage industries (producing up to 10 kg of waste daily): ₹1,500/month
    • Warehouses, cold storage units: ₹2,500/month
  • Event Venues
    • Marriage halls, festival halls, exhibitions, fairs (up to 3,000 sq. meters): ₹5,000/month
    • Marriage halls, festival halls, exhibitions, fairs (above 3,000 sq. meters): ₹7,500/month

This proposal aims to improve waste management and ensure better cleanliness across Mumbai.
